bordeauxBordeaux. What more do you need to know? Steeped in tradition and, yes, a bit of French snootiness, the wines of Bordeaux are something special. From the Right Bank to the Left, from Médoc to Margaux to St. Emilion, we will be sampling some wonderful wines. Our tasting will include some older wines as well as some from the stunning 2005 and 2009 vintages. What could be bad about that?

sardinia

The Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardina are home to some of the most unique and interesting wines in the world. Steeped in history, viticulture on these islands date back to pre-Roman times. It is known that the Greeks were growing vines in Sicily in the 8th century, BC. Today, these regions provide a unique flavor of Italy and the wines are something special that you don’t find on the mainland of Italy. Both red and white varieties are being produced from grapes you may be familiar with and some not so widely known. Please join us as we cruise the Mediterranean in search of fantastic wines from these charming islands.

zin-signZinfandel has a long history in America. It was brought to New York in 1820 by a fellow named George Gibbs from cuttings he obtained in Austria. By the 1850’s the grape was being cultivated in nurseries and made it’s way to Napa and Sonoma valleys. It once was the most planted varietal in California and made it’s way into most of the red “jug” wines that dominated in the middle of the 20th century. It has become adopted as an American grape. It is also the same grape as Primativo in Italy and both trace their roots to beginnings in Croatia.

My, how this grape has grown up. California is riddled with century old zinfandel plantings with gnarly trunks that produce some spectacular wines. Please join us for an evening of zinfandels that are true to delight all palates.

WA-wineIn these dog days of summer my thoughts always turn toward Washington wines for some reason. Our next wine tasting will take us back to Pacific North West. Scott and Lori made the pilgrimage out there recently and brought back some exquisite wines you just will not be able to find anywhere else. Eastern Washington, where most of the vineyards are located, has cold winters and hot summers making the grapes produce full bodied wines bursting with flavors. You will not want to miss this amazing tasting event.

rogueriverThe Rogue River in southern Oregon is a favorite for rafters looking for exciting white water to traverse. Actually the Rogue Valley is comprised of three different valleys that produce spectacular wines – the Bear Creek Valley, the Applegate Valley and the Illinois valley. These valleys are different in climate – the Bear Creek Valley is warm and dry and similar to Bordeaux whereas the Applegate Valley is warmer and drier than Illinois valley to its west but not as warm as Bear Creek Valley. Our own Bill Brunton has sources some spectacular selections of wines from this region that we will taste at our next AWS wine tasting. You will not want to miss it.

Northern Rhone – Oui

572593129902331There’s something special about the Rhone Valley of France. And in the northern parts the wines are simply incredible. The areas of Cotes Roti and Crozes Hermitage produce some of the finest wines in the world. And it’s no wonder as the vines are grown on steep terraced mountainsides that create unique terroir and flavors. Undoubtedly this will be the most talked about tasting of the year for the Red River Valley American Wine Society and you will kick yourself if you miss this one. The northern Rhone is widely considered the “home terroir” of the syrah grape, and many famous wine writers sing the praises of these celebrated appellations, and state that the finest expression of the syrah varietal is found on the steep slopes above the Rhone. Our opener for the evening, the Celeste by Chave is a blend of 90% Roussanne and 10 % Marsanne; the rest of the wines will feature these famous syrahs from the two AOC’s mentioned above as well as St. Joseph, Hermitage and Cornas. See you on Saturday!

chippers

If you love ports, you know how wonderful they can be. I once heard that a nice ruby or tawny port goes well with chocolate, nuts and caramel. So, of course I immediately paired a 20 year old vintage port with a snickers bar and it was a match made in heaven. Ports are just one type of sweet and/or fortified dessert wines. And these wines are not necessarily just for pairing with desserts. Sauternes, the famous sweet rich white wine from France is a perfect player with fois gras. And cheeses are also exquisite with dessert wines. What would you accompany an ice style maple wine with? Well come find out at our next wine tasting event.

We invite you to experience the world of sweet wines that will be sure to please every palate. You will find these to be rich and satisfying and definitely sipping wines rather than swigging wines. You will be able to experience a range of wines from sauternes and sherries to ports and specialty wines. So, please join us on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 – and don’t forget to bring your sweetie for a pre-Valentines day experience.

The Other Rhones

rhone-wineFrance has long been regarded as the source of great wines. While Bordeaux and Burgundy get most of the hype, the wines of the Rhone River are some of the best wines in world. Last November we tasted wines from the most prestigious appellations of the Northern Rhone, and in April we will taste wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the most highly regarded of Southern Rhone appellations. Along with the high prestige of those AOCs come high prices.  But there are many, many wines produced in the Rhone region, particularly the southern Rhone, and over the last few decades some of these villages have been recognized with their own AOC designations, principally east of the Rhone, from the river to the Dentelles de Montmirail Mountains.  These appellations are producing very good wines and at muc
h lower price points than their more famous Rhone “cousins”.  So, at this tasting event, we will sample these other, lesser-known wines of the Southern Rhone region.  The most notable of these other AOCs are Gigondas and Vacqueyras, which will be our focus, but we will also sample representatives of a few other appellations.

The Pope’s New Castle

chateauneuf_du_pape.1906_carte.pd_Nestled in the Rhone Valley just north of Avignon, France lies the wine region known as Chateauneuf-du-pape. This literally translates to “New Castle of the Pope”. The region is steeped in history and winemaking and produce some of France’s finest red wines. The wines are big, bold and full of flavor. The predominant grapes from the area are Grenache Noir (70%)Syrah (11%), and Mourvèdre (7%) and these grapes make up the majority of the blends in the region. Other grapes that may or may not be added to these wines include CinsautClaudetteGrenache BlancRoussanne, and Bourboulenc. The warm climate and high sugars produce wines with typically high alcohol levels. Traditional winemaking techniques involve fermenting with the stems resulting in complex wines with higher tannins.  Thus, these wines tend to be laid down in the cellar for years before they are ready for drinking. This practice has been changing in recent years as the stem tannins tend to be more bitter than from the skins. Also, as Grenache Noir is prone to oxidize, the wines are not often stored in small oak barrels but aged in large concrete tanks or larger oak barrels or tanks.

Blending Grapes

Who doesn’t love blended wines? Most wines have more than one grape variety in them even if they only list one on the label. Different varieties provide different components to a wine to round out it’s flavors, aromas and textures. Some of the grapes used for blending are rare as single varietals. And there are so many different grapes the you may not have heard of that are commonly blended into various white and red wines. Have you heard of Picpoul? Gros Manseng? How about Cabernet Franc? We will be exploring unusual single varietal wines at this month’s wine tasting. Please join us for Blended Wines – deconstructed.

mendoza-malbecIn 1868 the malbec grape was introduced to Argentina by a French agronomist who brought cuttings from Bordeaux. The grape has flourished in South America and Argentina, especially the Mendoza area has become well known for it’s big bold and distinctive malbec wines. While this grape has been present in Bordeaux blends in France, the Cahor region has become famous for it’s malbec dominated wines. Around the same time the Carménère grape was brought from France to the new world where it settled in Chile. Join us for a wine tasting of these delicious and distinctive grapes.

Tempranillo

tempranilloKnown by many names (see below), the Tempranillo grape has had a long history and impact in Europe – especially in Spain. Today this black grape is being grown in regions all over the world. The name “Tempranillo” stems from the Spanish word Temprano meaning early. The grape ripens several weeks earlier than many other traditional varieties. It often has a rather neutral profile and is thus typically blended with other grapes such as grenache or carignan. However, in some places it expresses more fruit qualities such as plum, berries and aromas of tobacco and leather. They can make exquisitely complex red wines. Join us as we explore the world of Tempranillos and experience what the grape has to offer.

pnMade famous by the movie Sideways about the Santa Barbara wine region, the delicate and versatile Pinot Noir grape calls Burgundy, France home. But now it’s grown across the world. Several regions have emerged as producers of high quality wine from this finicky grape; Russian River Valley and Carneros in California, Oregon, New Zealand, and even Switzerland and South Africa. Typically grown in cooler regions, this grape is light bodied with low tannins and can express a very wide range of flavors depending on the region and the climate.  Come join us as we explore the world of Pinot Noir.
